SMEs to benefit from cheaper air quality permits
The cost of an environmental permit relating to air quality limits has been reduced for small- and medium-sized businesses (SMEs)
Businesses regulated by local authorities are required under air pollution regulations to have a permit to operate once they reach certain air quality limits, such as printing works or metal foundries.
The reduced cost will apply to business that have either stopped production or temporarily reduced operations and so fallen below the level that requires regulation. Environment minister Jim Fitzpatrick announced the 60 per cent cost reduction, which aims to help businesses while still protecting the environment.
He said: ‘We know re-applying for these permits is an additional cost for businesses – that’s why we have taken action to help SMEs retain their permits during these difficult economic times. By greatly reducing the cost, businesses will save money by paying less to keep their permit and be able to return to previous production levels without the additional costs of re-applying.’
