Transfer to Chartered Member (CQP) for current Members and Fellows
If you are a Member or Fellow and have not yet transferred to Chartered Quality Professional status, the process is as follows:
- You may transfer when you pay your next annual membership fees. In this case transfer is free.
- If you wish to transfer outside of your annual renewal, there will be a small charge to cover administration costs. In this case you may request to transfer on line or complete the Application Form/Transfer CQI-0004
Frequently asked questions
- Q: Will the CQI issue a new or separate certificate to Chartered Members?
- A: Yes, a new certificate will be issued to Members and Fellows who request an upgrade and agree to the CPD (continuing professional development) requirements. This will replace their existing certificate.
- Q: How much will it cost to upgrade to CQP?
- A: There will be no charge if you request transfer when you pay your 2009 annual subscription. Outside this time there will be an administrative charge of £37 (based on 2008 rates, the 2009 rate may vary).
- Q: I have recently become a Fellow (or Member) of the institute. Will I be granted chartered status automatically or will I have to undergo formal assessment again to gain chartered status?
- A: You will need to request a transfer to chartered status and agree to the CPD requirements; a further assessment is not required.
- Q: What designated letters can I use if I hold chartered status?
- A: You will be permitted to use MCQI CQP or FCQI CQP, depending on your grade of membership.
- Q: When can I start to use my post-nominal letters?
- A: You can start to use your post-nominal letters after the formal launch of chartered membership.
- Q: I am retired. Can I be a Chartered Quality Professional, even though because I am not working I do not really do any training or CPD?
- A: Yes, it is possible to be a CQP and retired. There is no set amount of CPD required: it is for you to determine the level of CPD appropriate to your current professional responsibilities. It may be appropriate for you to set an objective that could be met through regular reading of Qualityworld and other relevant industry magazines and attendance/contribution at branch meetings.
- Q: Is CPD mandatory for Chartered Quality Professionals?
- A: CPD is mandatory for CQI Chartered Quality Professionals (ie Chartered Members and Fellows) and there is a requirement for members at these grades to plan, undertake and keep records of CPD.
- Q: What does CPD consist of?
- A: In brief, chartered individuals are required to undertake and keep records of the following:
- identify personal learning objectives for the coming year
- plan and record learning activities and outcomes
- assess the extent to which learning objectives have been achieved over the past year
- Q: How much CPD am I required to undertake?
- A: There is no specified minimum number of hours that you have to meet. However you should undertake sufficient CPD to maintain your professional competence and enable you to achieve your personal professional goals. For guidance, an active quality professional would expect to spend at least 25 hours a year on CPD and would probably have some 3-4 key learning objectives
- Q: What is a CPD activity log?
- A: The CQI planning sheet (form CQI-0007 Word document) can be used for this purpose. How you assess your needs, plan and undertake the learning, develop the skills, reflect on the extent of your achievement and keep records is an individual choice. The CPD log (form CQI-0008 - Word document) has been designed to record the activities that you have completed during each 12-month period. It should have an explanation of what you learned, the extent to which you achieved your learning objective and how you applied this learning to your work as a quality professional.
- Q: Do ACQI members get chartered status automatically?
- A: No, individual chartered status is reserved for the MCQI and FCQI grades of membership. ACQI members will have to upgrade to MCQI or FCQI to achieve individual chartered status.
- Q: As a Chartered Quality Professional can I obtain the qualification of Chartered Engineer (CEng)?
- A: No, CEng is awarded under the regulations of the Engineering Council UK (EC UK) and the Chartered Quality Professional is not recognised by EC UK as the equivalent of CEng.
- Q: As a Chartered Quality Professional am I entitled to register as a European Engineer (Eur. Ing.)?
- A: No, to register as a European Engineer (Eur. Ing.) you must have the CEng qualification.
- Q: Does the CQI have any plans to offer the Chartered Engineer (CEng) qualification?
- A: There are no plans to offer a route to CEng in the immediate future. The Engineering special interest group reviews this issue from time to time to test whether there is sufficient demand. Members who are interested should declare their interest by emailing esig@thecqi.org
