Today Programme Presenter, John Humphrys, Wins Top Journalist Award
London - October 30th, 2003 - John Humphrys, long time presenter of BBC Radio 4's Today Programme and renowned journalist, has today been awarded the Georges Borel journalist of the year award.
The Georges Borel prize is awarded by the European Organization for Quality (EOQ) in recognition of the journalist who has made the greatest contribution to Quality in a given year. Humphrys was awarded at the Institute of Quality Assurance (IQA) headquarters in Grosvenor Crescent in front of an audience including leaders in other professional Institutes, industry, commerce and the quality arena. Humphrys, who has a reputation for being one of the toughest interviewers on radio or television, has earned this top award for the challenging questions he subjected top industry leaders to, including Lord Sainsbury of Turville, parliamentary under-secretary of state for science, at Q2002 - the 46th EOQ World Quality Congress in Harrogate last year. The Congress was attended by an audience from 73 countries and a cross section of industry.
Frank Steer, IQA Director General and EOQ President, presented Humphrys with the prestigious award. "It was a brilliant performance, and it is still being commented on today in European quality circles for the way it threw down challenges," he said. "The debates John generated on the day among speakers and with audiences were fascinating. They continued after the session and they still continue. He is the natural choice for our journalist of the year and to be the recipient of the Georges Borel award"
John Humphrys said, "I'm not sure that journalists are typically associated with quality, so this is a rare honour in every sense."
