The Chartered Quality Institute

The CQI/PMI Six Sigma Black Belt

Black belts are expected to lead and consult in large scale improvements identified as critical by a business plan deployment process. This advanced training programme, extending to four weeks (including green belt component), and linked to a six sigma project, is designed to provide delegates with the familiarity with the tools to start their new roles effectively. Much of the statistical analysis will use Minitab software (a licence can be provided by PMI at a preferential rate). Delegates will be expected to have the full-time use of their own lap-top computer.

What are the benefits?

By the end of the course, you will:

  • Have an in depth understanding of the use and power of the methods and philosophies of six sigma methods and process improvement
  • Be able to drive complex problem resolution and solution development efforts
  • Apply the process improvement tools in varied circumstances
  • Be able to teach others in the organisation the basics of six sigma
  • Be able to use the programme as a foundation for career development
  • Achieve real improvements quickly
  • Facilitate six sigma methods on key projects
  • Have a network of contacts to call upon for support and advice

Who should attend?

All candidates for black belts within a six sigma company should use this programme as the foundation for their development. If they have already undertaken a PMI Mastering Process Improvement or PMI Six Sigma Green Belt programme we have a two week conversion to black belt course available.

Candidates need to be highly motivated for working in improvement. They should be literate and confident with complex numbers, ready and able to use a statistical package with guidance. The training itself is intense, requiring study in the evenings between the teaching days. We can provide foundation training on request for individuals thought to have the potential but have so far had limited exposure to statistics or improvement projects.

Accreditation

Candidates will be certified as black belts once they have satisfied the following criteria:

  • Completed the training programme.
  • Passed an examination; part closed book, part open book, part case study.
  • Completed, written up and presented a qualifying six sigma project.

How to achieve your black belt

Step 1: Choose a complete green belt wave and location
Step 2: Choose a complete black belt conversion wave

Please note:
A green belt must be completed before moving on to the black belt conversion wave. You may choose waves that are delivered either in the same location or different locations.
